ST. LOUIS CHEESE CUTTER No. 38 Antique CASH REGISTER Machine $1.95 Max c.1920 An antique St. Louis "Cheese Cutter" model 38 Cash Register dating to circa 1920. We are pleased to present this antique St. Louis No. 38 Cash Register for your consideration. Known as a Cheese Cutter model, the Register dates to approximately 1920 and is an early model that will ring up to only $1.95 in 5 cent increments, possibly used in a Candy or similar store. The Cheese Cutter name was given to these models due to the unusual lever on the front that moves side-to-side, used to select the currency amount. The Register measures 16-1/2 inches high, 10-1/2 inches wide, and 17 inches deep. Quite heavy, it weighs 48-3/4 pounds. A metal plaque on the front has the embossed numbers 31654 and 38. The early cash drawer has just one compartment for paper bills, with 5 compartments for coins. A solid unit and a good candidate for restoration, there are a number of cosmetic issues. The top surface on the front has been painted over and is not original. Non-painted metal surfaces show light surface rust. The metal plates under the glass with the currency numbers show some peeling paint with areas of surface rust. Both paper labels, one in the cash drawer and one on the underside of the drawer, show wear with some paper and text loss. The varnish finish covering the wood of the cash drawer shows some crazing. The glass at the top shows some chipping at edges in a few places. Despite the cosmetic issues, the Cash Register is working well mechanically. A small two-position control selects whether to add $1.00 to the total. The Cheese Cutter control selects the amount of change from $0.05 to $0.95 in 5 cent increments. Pushing the Cheese Cutter control down rings up the amount selected, opening the cash drawer and raising the corresponding currency display indicators under glass at the top. We found the mechanical features to operate without difficulty. We rate the overall physical condition as good, with the mechanical condition rating as very good (see pictures). This is a nice example of an early St. Louis Cheese Cutter Cash Register. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
